Joy Sigaud

Our team first met Joy Sigaud at the performance of Shirley J. Thompson OBE’s ‘Women of the Windrush’ at The Tabernacle. The performance, one of two, was sponsored by Ballymore to commemorate this year’s 75thAnniversary of the Windrush generation.

The team were captivated by Joy’s charisma and storytelling which is no wonder given she is the founder and editor of Editions Media, which publishes Editions Lifestyle Magazines and the Windrush newsletters. The two publications provide a platform for positive stories to be told about the Black community in a format that is appealing and accessible to all.

Joy has also curated and co-authored the book, Jamaicans in Britain: A Legacy of Leadership, which was published last year and has become an important resource now available in several libraries.  The book charts the lives of more than 500 Jamaican people and their descendants, who predominantly came to the UK between 1948 and 1972. The book documents the hardships this community faced while adapting to a new life in Britain and contains empowering examples of how members of the community overcame the difficulties that they faced to become leadership figures.

Joy’s talents in the arts aren’t just through her writing, she’s also a classical music composer whose works have been recorded at Abbey Road Studios and performed live by the Philharmonia Orchestra. She wrote Windrush Variations which was performed by the orchestra chamber section for the unveiling of the Windrush and Commonwealth NHS Nurses and Midwives Statue in September 2021.

In support of Black History Month and the 75th Anniversary of the Windrush generation, Ballymore have sponsored this month’s October Newsletter in which Joy has written a piece on Project Flourish.
