Younger, non-homeowners are the most likely to support new developments in their area but the least likely to engage in traditional consultation methods, research by Just Build Homes has revealed.
With the housing crisis in London particularly acute, Ballymore has partnered with Just Build Homes to engage these residents in the local and surrounding areas to ensure their views are heard in relation to the proposals for the Kensal Canalside Opportunity Area - also known as Project Flourish.
Between November last year and July of this, more than 800 people registered their support for Kensal Canalside on the Kensington & Chelsea planning portal, with at least 450 people adding their comments with the help of Just Build Homes.
70% of those were renters in council and private accommodation, and 61% were under 44. They came from Kensington & Chelsea, Westminster, Brent and Hammersmith & Fulham. 36% of those who backed the scheme were over 44 – a growing trend, as parents worry about the housing prospects for their children.
Each person submitted an individual letter in favour of the proposals, with the common reasons for supporting being the delivery of new affordable housing, the creation of green and community spaces, and employment opportunities.
For those in the immediate area, there was a strong desire to see the Kensal Canalside site regenerated and improved from its current state.
Alex Crowley, co-founder of Just Build Homes said: “By talking to the people who stand to gain from building homes, developers can ensure local authorities see a more balanced picture of local opinion. That’s clearly the case here, with the plan to deliver a new neighbourhood at Kensal Canalside strongly supported because it is delivering much-needed homes.”
If you support the plans for Kensal Canalside but haven’t added a comment yet, there is still time. To back the proposals and make your voice heard, please visit https://tinyurl.com/2s4kywx6 and follow the steps outlined.
